Log Line-

The Players try to catch a mob assassin with an elaborate baseball card con, to get to his boss, a major crime czar.

Synopsis:

Ice, Alphonse and Charlie are minding their own business at an illegal gambling club in Laurel Canyon when they witness the brutal murder of a flamboyant high roller, by the person he was taunting, Larry Dudevitch.

It turns out, Dudevitch is a known assassin for a major crime boss, but they did not commission his most recent hit. So to catch the chieftain, the FBI's Chris Kowalski (Mia Korf) enlists her parolees to nab Dudevitch, who in turn should finger the boss. They hide a microphone in a bottle cork of Italian olive oil (presented by Alphonse posing to be a Chicago mafia representative). Through the microphone they discover that the boss, Ben Pappas (Jon Polito) is looking to spend $200,000 on a rare baseball card. This makes access easy.

The Players steal the card from a traveling Smithsonian exhibition, but Charlie, a surprising expert in this area, can tell it's a fake. Unknown to them, Dudevitch got another call from someone professing to have the real card. It turns out to be Milo 0' Bannon, Charlie's long lost lying, cheating and philandering father. Both cardholders try to out-con the other. However, with both of them holding fakes, they reason that closing the deal will be easier for them - or so they think. Charlie has posed as Professor Harold Schultz, a baseball card authenticity expert, hired by Pappas, but when it comes time for the meeting, his cover is blown.

Kowalski and the Feds are able to nail Dudevitch, when he grabs and shoots a hostage (Ice, posing as a janitor, protected by bullet proof vest), for his murder charges. Dudevitch in turn rolls on Pappas and, once again, the Players help the FBI apprehend dangerous criminals.
